Starting another rewatch of OG Twin Peaks. The show rewards with every rewatch. Almost done with the first episode and I’m noticing how Cooper’s demeanor changes within the space of one episode. He starts off friendly but firm- his refusal to allow Dr Jacoby to attend the autopsy of Laura Palmer and the way he handles Bobby as an example. By the end of the first episode, Cooper comes across as more empathetic, perhaps the influence of Twin Peaks makes him more gentle.
What’s notable is the continuity in character from the Cooper of Fire Walk With Me who is certainly a lot colder. Kudos to Lynch and McLachlan for achieving this continuity despite the TV show preceding the movie.
The first episode does a great job of getting all the beats in from the get go. The little subtleties like MIKE just casually strolling past Sheriff Truman and Cooper are even more rewarding when you know what’s coming.
